Organic food has no health benefits?

The BBC has just reported the findings of a new study on organic versus conventional food. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8174482.stm

The study finds no benefits of organic over conventional food.

However, the study seemed to be focused solely on nutrient value. I thought the main point of eating organic was what you AVOIDED ingesting! (Chemicals, pesticide etc.)

Opinions please!

There is extensive evidence to support the selection of organic food over conventionally produced food.

Only one or two generations ago, conventional food was organic. People forget.
I have an obese, elderly neighbour who claims that she would never eat organic food - and yet, she was raised on organic food ! It is only in recent years mankind has come to accept food colourings, preservatives and additives as "conventional".

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has spent considerable time and cost to research the nutritional difference between an organic carrot and a toxic carrot. A pre-schooler could have told them that both carrots would contain the same nutrition.

Today's "conventional" food is very much cost-focused. One needs to look no further than the requirement for mankind to have an holistic approach to life, food and health to understand why organic is best.

Organic Federation of Australia's chairman Andre Leu said the agency had a "history of bias against organic food" and that "the report ignores the health issue of pesticide use".

Here's some more evidence;

"Organic farming is a holistic, integrated approach which conserves soils, encourages biodiversity, eliminates greenhouse gas-intensive nitrogen inputs, conserves genetic diversity, and brings more income to the grower," said Andrew Lee of the Sustainable Development Commission.
"And is very probably healthier to boot," he wrote in a letter to the Guardian newspaper.

Molly Connisbee of the Soil Association said that organic farms have on average 30 percent more species and 50 percent more wildlife like birds, butterflies and bees.
"Other environmental benefits are self-evident -- there's less dangerous waste on organic farms and almost no pesticide use. Artificial nitrogen fertiliser is banned in organic farming, so there's less runoff of nutrients that cause algae blooms in coastal waters," she said.
