Can an inner-city garden be considered organic ?

Due to traffic and general city-pollution, could an inner-city garden be truly considered organic ?

That's a good contrarian viewpoint.
I know from living in Tokyo that recent efforts to increase the number of roof top gardens and green spots on the rooves of buildings is having a genuine cooling effect, and that is good for the environment.

However, I personally would not regard any produce from rooftops inside a city with high pollutant levels like Tokyo as "organic".

Mind you, I often see "organic" farms beside major roads, even huge highways like the Autobahn. This certainly raises the question, "How much should location be considered as an input to the ability to use the label "organic" as opposed to any organic farming practices practiced on the actual soil itself. And how can we consumers find out the difference?

Air monitoring in Kuwait was pretty intense when they experienced widespread oil well fires. Most of the data concerned air quality monitoring but the good news was that apart from lead, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metal levels in soil were not significantly affected.
I’d say that with the introduction of unleaded petrol in most western countries that even lead should not be a particular problem.
