The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) is asking manufacturers to cut the size of chocolate bars, confectionary and cans of fizzy drinks to tackle rising rates of obesity. Is this a good idea?

The FSA wants bars of chocolate to be no larger than 40g by 2012, and cans of fizzy drinks to be cut from 330ml to 250ml by 2015, a draft consultation states. The voluntary proposals also call for manufacturers to reduce the amount of saturated fat and added sugar in biscuits, cakes, pastries, chocolate confectionery and soft drinks.

No. It is an individual's right to eat what they want.
What right has a government to ascertain what portion of the pig one may have ?

Governments already decide what dosage of chemicals one will induce, eg: fluoride. But why should they choose certain chemicals and ingredients that suit their monetary purposes and then not control other aspects that they have no interest in. Hypocrites.

And, a 40g bar of chocolate ? Well, goodness me. If I want chocolate, I will certainly eat more than 40g in one sitting.

A reduction of sugar and saturated fats is good, but the propasal put forward is voluntary and I do not think many manufacturing volunteers will step forward for this giant step backwards.
