Is it safe for Ferrous sulfate (used in disinfectant and weedkiller) to be put in vitamin pills?
Ferrous sulfate is used as a disinfectant and weedkiller. It is also commonly used as an iron supplement in vitamin pills. Is this OK?Answers

It depends on whether the person taking it is iron deficient or not. I personally take only vitamins and supplements that do not contain iron. Iron uptake is tightly regulated in people with no intestinal mucosal damage but could be absorbed in excessive amounts in those who have (and an increasing problem in the population). The human body has no way of naturally reducing body iron load. Too much free iron is very harmful because it is so reactive and productive of free radicals. Men and postmenopausal women in particular should avoid vitamins and supplements with added iron.Ferrous iron has a significantly higher bioavailability than heme iron - seen as "good" by researchers - and possibly it is in iron deficiency anaemia. But in non-deficiency may potentially lead to low-level, chronic iron overload.
